My husband and I began using Love and Logic parenting techniques with our children about 7 or 8 years ago. We went through the training seminar at our church and read the book focused on teens and listened to a couple of CD's. It was at that time that we decided to utilize the Love and Logic in the Classroom tools at the school where I was an administrator, too. After much time and practice, I have come to the opinion that it is best used for children who are around 8 years old and above for prime effectiveness. (If you are a teacher, this will change your life and it is a good alternative to pbs which is still being used in most schools around the public sector but doesn't really work as well with high aged students. Get Love and Logic in the Classroom, you will thank me.)
Parents: It is absolutely excellent for ages 11 and up and even into the college years. I would wholeheartedly recommend Love and Logic, from personal experience, to any parent of a child in this age group. You do not have to attend a class, you can just read the book, watch the videos, and/or listen to the CD or it is probably on itunes by now. The best CD I found was the one called "Developing Character in Your Teen" and the book is called Parenting with Love and Logic for Teens. If you are committed to following the instructions, you will be rewarded with character filled kids.
Remember that parenting is a job with a differed payment plan. If you do it right, you are paid back with emotionally intelligent adult children who serve the greater good and have a positive relationship with you. If you do it wrong, you end up paying for it for the rest of your life. Parenting is the most important task of your life and yet some of us only spend a few minutes a day interacting with our children.
Go big or go home. Show your kids you love them by setting clear boundaries and sticking to a plan even when it is inconvenient for you and them. If they know you are committed to them becoming people of character and moral strength first and foremost, they will thank you, eventually. You are the adult, you are the parent, God holds you responsible for this big job, so do it right.
Ok, that's my pep talk for today besides the multiplication tables for the grade school aged kiddos.
